Charter girls lose conference tourney battle

The crowd was raucous, the noise ear-splitting when the Marco Island Charter Middle School girls battled Community Christian of Port Charlotte on Tuesday in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

For much of the game the lead by either team was no more than three points, with that being the winning number, 25-22, in favor of the visiting Mustangs.

The Lady Eagles were without Ariana Garousi, who averaged 20 points a game, lost for the season to a knee injury. All she could do was keep score for her Charter team.

Kalani Siler led the team in scoring with 8, while Jammy Spencer and McKenna Lampos knocked in 4 each and Tamara Fradeus, April Alvarado and Vanessa Torres tallied 2 each.

Although in a losing effort, coach Mike Lampos was proud of how his girls fought. “When the season started most of these girls knew little about the game,” he said. “Now they know how to run plays.”

The girls are back in action with a Collier County Public Middle Schools Conference game, hosting East Naples at 12:45 a.m. The boys host East Naples at 11:30 a.m.
