Local tennis column: Naples Tennis Center hosting Girls Night Out on Feb. 2

— The phrase "girls night out" now has special meaning to local tennis players.

Naples Community Tennis Center will host a "Girls Night Out!" event on Thursday, Feb. 2. The event will start with a tennis round-robin at 5:30 p.m. and end with cocktails, cheese and snacks and a short self-defense lecture and demonstration by martial arts expert Bill Oliver.

Super Seniors play on: The Mid-Cape Tennis Club in Cape Coral was the second stop on the Florida Super Seniors Grand Prix 2012, and several local players had solid singles results: 55s: David Vaughn (Fort Myers) d. Steve Cahall (Altamonte Springs); 60s: Steve Shortridge (Fort Myers) d. Dennis Posteraro (PA); 65s: Don Long (N.Y., repeated as champ) d. Joe Simon (Fernadina); 70s: Fred Drilling (Estero, repeated as champ) d. William Koziol (Texas); 75s: King Van Nostrand (world No. 1) d. Gordon Hammes (Naples); 80s: David Rothgaber (Longboat Key) d. Neil McDonald (Naples); 85s: Fred Sarkis (Brandenton) d. Rudy Antonio (New Jersey).

In doubles, locals among the winning teams were: 55s: Peter Redpath (Sanibel) and David Vaughn (Fort Myers); 60s: Terry See (Fort Myers) and Steve Shreiner (Fort Myers); 65s: Dave Warner (Fort Myers) and Dave Spilseth (Minnesota); 70s: Fred Drilling (Estero) and Clive Kileff (Tennessee).

This week, the tour is being played at the Club at Sterling Oaks with a record 264 entrants in North Naples. Larry Turville, David Nash and Fred Drilling are some of the featured players this week. Fans are welcome to watch the play free of charge, now through the finals on the weekend.

Tourney at Waldorf: To begin Jan. 28 is the third-annual Waldorf Astoria Naples Tennis Club NTRP Open. To sign up for this event on the USTA website, go to tournament No. 150043512. This event has all levels of singles and doubles for men and women. The Waldorf Astoria Naples was formerly known as Naples Grande Beach Resort. The conversion and name change took effect on Jan. 1.

McKinley tourney nears: The Tom McKinley Memorial Adult Designated at Arthur Allen Tennis Center is coming up at Cambier Park on Jan. 28. Divisions will range from Men's 35-50. The tourney ID for this one is 150005412. Call 213-3060.

'Stroke of the Week' is back: The popular "Stroke of the Week" sessions headed up by Curly Davis are resuming at Naples Bath and Tennis Club. Sessions are Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1 to 2 p.m. Each week features instruction in a different stroke.
