More than 100 sailors took to the waters off Fort Lauderdale in the annual "Boomerang" Regatta hosted by Lauderdale Yacht Club on Jan. 21 and 22.
Naples Community Sailing Center took a team consisting of 11 youth sailors ranging in age from 7 to 13. The local sailors encountered elements on the race course not commonly found in Naples, including strong currents, a sand bar which interfered depending on the changing tide, and constantly shifting winds.
In the Optimist Green fleet, NCSC top finishers included Katie Havig, with a fifth-place trophy after five races, and Justin Marciano taking sixth place. Danny Hughes, Alexandra Igoe, Patrick Igoe, Audrey Keller, Carson Page and Aidan Piotrowski also sailed well for the team.
Sailing on the Optimist Red, White and Blue course, all Naples sailors walked away with a trophy in hand. In the Red Fleet, two Naples sailors battled back and forth on the leader board with Lucie Keller taking eighth and Claire Havig finishing ninth.
In the Optimist Blue Fleet, Matt Keller ended the weekend with an overall third-place finish, including two "bullets," or first-place finishes out of six races.
Naples Community Sailing Center sailors with next travel north for the next stop on the Spring circuit in St. Petersburg, Feb. 4 and 5.
