A Naples father and his 11-year-old son who were burned in a boat explosion Friday both were in serious condition late Monday, a Tampa General Hospital spokeswoman said.
Helmut Sempf, 59, remains hospitalized with burns over 75 percent of his body after the Friday night fire on Bembury Drive. After being listed in serious condition Sunday, he returned to critical condition Monday morning but was returned to serious condition by 9:30 p.m.
The 11-year-old, Kristoff Sempf, was upgraded from serious to fair condition Monday morning but also returned to serious condition later that day. The Lake Park Elementary School student suffered burns to his lower legs.
The explosion appears accidental. Helmut Sempf was trying to remove gasoline from the boat when a spark caused the blast, fire officials said.
