Emaciated teen found in burning mobile home in Florida

DEERFIELD BEACH — Broward Sheriff's deputies arrested a 47-year-old man after finding his emaciated teenage son in their burning mobile home in Deerfield Beach.

The South Florida SunSentinel reports the 14-year-old boy weighs only 85 pounds. His father, Darin MacDannald, remained in the Broward County Jail early Friday on cruelty toward a child and infliction of physical/mental injury charges.

Authorities say they responded to a fire at the home on Tuesday. The boy was taken to a hospital where doctors determined he was undernourished and had overdosed on cocaine, marijuana and a cocktail of other drugs.

Sheriff's officials say the boy's condition was not known on Thursday, but he remained in the hospital.

MacDannald told deputies he didn't know where the boy got the drugs.
