A 32-year-old former bookkeeper is accused of stealing nearly $8,000 from Varsity Lakes Middle School in Lehigh Acres.

Yidenia Alonso, of the 1500 block of Gretchen Avenue, faces charges of grand theft and scheme to defraud.

A news release said Alonso collected money from ticket sales, concession stand sales and money that parents had given their children to attend the school’s morning program.

Between February of 2009 and March of 2010, she was given a total of $7,879.36, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said Alonso deposited the checks but pocketed some of the cash for herself. Following an investigation, the 32-year-old was arrested Monday and taken to the Lee County jail.

A spokeswoman from the school district said Alonso resigned in April of 2011.
