A 22-year-old Ave Maria University student died in a single-vehicle crash Friday morning in northeastern Collier County.
Clayton R. Burroughs, a junior who lived on Marco Island, was killed in the crash, which occurred just after 6 a.m. on Camp Keais Road, about 2 miles south of Immokalee Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The FHP reported Burroughs was driving a 1998 Pontiac sedan south on Camp Keais Road when he lost control of the vehicle, crashed into at least four trees and overturned into a drainage ditch on the east side of the road.
He was not wearing a seat belt, and blood alcohol tests are pending, according to the FHP report.
An Ave Maria spokesman said Burroughs, originally from Glen Ridge, N.J., was working on campus this summer. Burroughs played football for the Ave Maria Gyrenes.
The university held a mass service for Burroughs on Friday and plans to hold another in the fall.
“Clay was a beloved member of the Ave Maria family, and this news is heartbreaking,” President Jim Towey said in a campuswide announcement. “ ... May Our Lady console his family, classmates on campus, and all of those who love him and were touched by his beautiful life.”
