Report: Collier deputy runs red light, causes crash

A Naples woman received minor injuries after a lieutenant with the Collier County Sheriff's Office ran a red light and struck her vehicle, troopers said.

Lt. George E. Welch, 46, was driving northbound on U.S. 41 in a 2011 Ford F150 Sheriff's Office vehicle. As he approached the intersection of Fourth Avenue North, Welch ran a red stop light and struck the front of a woman's 2009 Audi 100, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

Welch and the woman, 59-year-old Diana Egan Aragon, had minor injuries from the crash and were taken to NCH Downtown Naples hospital.

Both were wearing seatbelts, and alcohol and speed are not thought to have been factors in the wreck, troopers said. Welch received a citation for violation of a traffic control signal.

Spokeswoman Karie Partington said the Sheriff's Office is investigating the crash, as is standard procedure.
