Youth baseball: South Fort Myers rides long ball to opening win in Little League state tourney

Three home runs helped South Fort Myers post a 6-3 win against West Boynton Beach in the first game of pool play at the Florida Little League State Tournament on Friday evening in DeBary.

Back-to-back solo home runs by Jake Munnings and Grant Boland gave South a 2-0 lead in the top of the third.

After West Boynton Beach knotted the game in the bottom of the inning, Giovany Lorenzo put South ahead for good with another solo home run in the fourth.

"He hit a monster home run. I've never seen a 12-year-old hit the ball so far," said Lorenzo's father, Wilson, who manages the team.

The younger Lorenzo also shined on the mound. He pitched into the sixth inning before reaching the 85-pitch limit. Josh Ashby retired the final two outs in relief.

Pool play continues today. South, which is 11-0 this summer, will face Bayshore at 1 p.m. and then conclude pool play against Plant City at 7 p.m. The top two teams in both pools will advance to the semifinals Sunday.
