— A Golden Gate man is facing grand theft charges after deputies say he stole kayaks from a man's home.

Phillip Spell, 33, of the 1900 block of 45th Terrace Southwest, was arrested Thursday by Collier deputies at the 1500 block of Fifth Avenue South.

According to an arrest report, the victim returned home to find a black pickup truck in his driveway. He told deputies hewitnessed Spell and another man pulling his two kayaks off the rack.

Spell and his friend were unable to explain to the victim why they had the kayaks but told him that they needed water from the victim's house because his truck was out of water, according to reports.

The victim told deputies that he told Spell and his friend to get off his property and to never come back.

Spell and his friend left but the victim said he discovered fishing equipment to have been stolen from his garage, according to reports.

Spell and his wife were later found at the La Quinta hotel where they were both questioned, deputies said.

Spell's wife told deputies that she did not partake in the thefts but did however ride with her husband and his friend to the home knowing they were going to steal the kayaks. However, she said Spell threatened to shoot her if she did not go with him, according to reports.

Spell faces charges of grand theft and burglary.
