A popular tourist attraction is being temporarily shut down because of weather conditions.

Roger Jacobsen, Naples' harbor master, said the city plans to temporarily close the Naples Pier to the shoreline. Jacobsen said city officials made the decision after they found waves breaking over the top of the pier Tuesday afternoon.

It's the third time the pier has been closed in about four years. Monday was the second time, Jacobsen said.

Jacobsen said the pier was closed from about 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday because of bad weather.

City staff will monitor the weather conditions throughout the day. If the tide pattern is similar to Monday,'s Jacobsen said the pier could be reopened around 8 p.m. Tuesday.

A no trespassing sign will be posted at the shoreline to warn beachgoers of the closure. Beach patrol will also be on the pier to make sure no one enters the closed portion.
