The races in both divisions in the Marco Men’s Senior Softball League stayed tight as Nacho Mama’s lead in the Island Division was cut to one game over Sand Bar and two games over the Islander Restaurant, with only three games remaining in the season.
Joey’s Pizza opened a one game lead in the Marco Division, having defeated ADKOS to break a first-place tie. There are four games remaining in the Marco Division.

Nacho Mama’s, 8,
Sand Bar, 2
Power-hitting John Cavanagh drove in three runs on three hits, one a colossal two-run home run and Jim Green drove home two runs on a double for Nacho Mama’s. Winning pitcher George Schnorr scattered 10 Sand Bar hits, three by Bill Shurina.
14, Casa Mia, 12
Islander Restaurant survived a last-inning rally by Casa Mia for the win. Casa Mia scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying runs on base, but unable to push them across. Bill Thompson, Ron Engels and Rich Schiller had three RBIs each for the Islander. Islander’s Ralph Sieja and Casa Mia’s Jeff Hultgren, John Remhoff, and Jack O’Brien had three-hit games. O’Brien and Ed Hamill drove in three runs each for Casa Mia. Rich Small and Murph Knapke blasted solo home runs for Casa Mia, while Ron Hobson and Fran Diotte cracked triples for the Islander.
Brewery, 17, DaVinci’s, 14
Dave Banghart rocketed two tape-measure home runs, one a grand slam, as part of his three hits, giving him six RBIs for the Brewery. John Barrett had three RBIs, Tom Angelo and Dave Coward two each, with Jack Mateja drilling three hits for the winners. John DeRosa and Chuck Wilson stung the ball for four hits and Denny Lello and Dan Moriarty had three hits each for DaVinci’s. DeRosa cracked two triples, Lello and Mike Cerutti had one each. Larry Anspach had three RBIs, DeRosa and Cerutti, two.
17, Brewery, 1
The Islander poured it on the Brewery, ending the game by the mercy rule of a 15-run differential at the end of eight innings. Ralph Sieja and Bill Thompson laced three hits each for the Islander. Thompson, Herm Griffith, Ed Kingsbury, Steve Clark and Ron Hobson had two RBIs each. Winning pitcher Ron Engels limited the Brewery to six hits and an unearned run.
Sand Bar, 11, Casa Mia, 7
Jimmy “The Glove” Cuevas pounded out four hits and Bob Levasseur three for Sand Bar. Cuevas had a solo home run, Scott Byers a three-run homer and Bill Shurina a triple. Byers recorded four RBIs, with Mike Behr and Levasseur pitching in with two each. Ray Kane and Bill Griffin had three hits each for Casa Mia, including a Griffin triple. Kane and Rich Small each drove in two runs in the loss.
Nacho Mama’s, 11, DaVinci’s, 6
DaVinci’s scored five runs in the first inning, before winning pitcher George Schnorr shut them down for the balance of the game. Butch Courson ripped four hits, one a triple, and John Cavanagh zipped another three to lead the comeback for Nacho’s. Jim Williams had three RBIs and Courson and Pete Oellich had two each.
Sand Bar, 20, Brewery, 9
Bill Shurina was 5-for-5 and drove in four runs and Ron Peterson three runs for Sand Bar. Tom McCullough belted a solo home run and Jim George racked up three hits in the win. Dave Banghart drove home four runs on a double and triple for the Brewery. Craig Cunningham chased home another three runs. Cunningham and Dave Coward had three hits each.
Islander Restaurant, 23,
Both teams ripped the cover off the ball, combining for 51 hits. Ed Kingsbury and Ron Hobson drilled four hits each; Ralph Sieja, Herm Griffith, Bill Thompson, Gary Lamotte, Rich Schiller and Mike Endelman had three hits each for the Islander. Kingsbury and Thompson each had four RBIs, Griffith three, with Hobson, Lamotte and Schiller having two each. John DeRosa had a perfect day, going 5-for-5 for DaVinci’s. Mike Behr stroked three hits. Dan Moriarty cracked a triple and had three RBIs, while DeRosa, Jerry Engel, and Larry Anspach had two each.
Casa Mia, 13, Nacho Mama’s, 4
Casa Mia knocked off first-place Nacho Mama’ behind the 11-hit pitching of Bill Griffin, who had the Nacho batters off stride all game. Jeff Hultgren peppered out hits at crucial points in the game. Griffin helped his own cause, smacking a triple, as did Rich Small who had three RBIs. Jack O’Brien, who made a number of key defensive plays, drove in four runs.
Crazy Flamingo, 11,
Joey’s Pizza, 10
Joey’s and the Crazy Flamingo battled, with the lead changing five times. Ultimately, Flamingo scored three runs in the last at-bats for the win. John Luegering had three hits and two RBIs, Fred Kramer drove in three runs on two hits and Dan O’Sullivan had two RBIs for Crazy Flamingo. Joey’s powered into the lead in the sixth behind three home runs. A two-run shot by Nick Jacullo and solo shots from Jim Dorey and Jim White. Tom Whitlock had three hits and Al Cenicola cracked a triple for Joey’s.
CJ’s on the Bay, 5, Rookies, 3
In a pitcher’s duel, CJ’s big right-hander from Mansfield, Ohio, Roger Wise, spun a nine-hitter in beating Rookies Ed Kopecky. Gary Schneider had a triple for CJ’s and Nick Brooks a two-run homer for Rookies.
Mutual of Omah, 13, ADKOS, 3
Roger Wise, pitching in his second game of the day, had a virtual carbon copy performance to his earlier game, collaring ADKOS to only eight hits. Roger Fleming lashed out four hits, one a triple, in the win for the Bank. Ed Brack drove in three runs on a triple and a single, while Tom Purtell followed suit with three RBIs, on a home run and double. Paul Vorwick smacked a triple for ADKOS.
Mutual of Omaha, 13,
CJ’s on the Bay, 1
John Hedges cranked a grand slam home run for the Bank. Tom Purtell chased home two runs and Roger Fleming had three hits and a RBI. Winning pitcher Gerry Garrett limited CJ’s to 10 hits while walking one batter.
Joey’s Pizza, 17, ADKOS, 8
Joey’s Pizza took over first place in the Marco Division, defeating ADKOS. Jim White and Nick Jacullo drove in three runs each and Joe Kruse and Jim Dorey had two RBIs each. Bill Kayhart and Al Cenicola rapped out three hits each in the win. Paul Vorwick and Don Rooksberry smacked triples for ADKOS, with Barry Bates and Larry Laird chasing home two runs each.
Crazy Flamingo’s, 10,
Crazy Flamingo avenged a one-run loss the last time they played Rookies when Bob Kirsinger drove home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Fred Kramer and Chuck Wilson accounted for six of Flamingo’s runs with three RBIs each. Wilson smacked a triple. Mike Walsh lashed out four hits, with Jack Evans and Dick Corley having three each for Rookies. Frank Dooley and Jake Jacobson each drove home two runs.
