Nacho Mama’s wins title on tie breaker

The regular season ended with a tie when Sand Bar blanked Nacho Mama’s in the Island Division.

The tie break was determined by head-to-head play, which Nacho Mama’s won, 4-2, in games. Joey’s Pizza won the Marco Division.

Both divisions finished out the season last week, beginning a double-elimination tournament this week.

Here are the season-ending games and playoffs in order of games played.


Sand Bar, 8, Nacho Mama’s, 0

Sand Bar blanked Nacho Mama’s resulting in both teams having an identical record of 15-7 for the regular season. Jim George accomplished an amazing feat of pitching his second shutout of the season, both against Nacho’s. George gave up only six hits while walking one batter. Scott Byers provided all the runs necessary with a three-run home run.

Brewery, 13, Islander Restaurant, 11

Brewery beat the Islander with a 23-hit attack. Craig Cunningham had a big day at the plate with four hits, including a tape-measure home run for the Brewery. Tom Angelo, Don Schwartz, and Bill Shurina ripped three hits each for the Brewery. Herm Griffith and Doug Smith had three hits each for the Islander Restaurant, with Griffith and Fran Diotte launching home runs.

Casa Mia, 14, DaVinci’s, 13

The game was a nip and tuck battle between Casa Mia and DaVinci’s, with DaVinci’s holding on to a slim 13-12 going into the top of the ninth when Bill Shurina drove in the winning run. Ray Kane and Tom Porter laced three hits each for Casa Mia. Kane, John Remhoff, Jeff Hultgren, and Rich Small each had two RBIs. John DeRosa, who has been tearing the cover off the ball this season, had four hits for DaVinci’s, while teammates Doug Smith and Denny Lello each lined three hits. John Sherwin and Mike Cerrutti each had four RBIs, with Cerutti’s coming on a grand slam home run.

TOURNAMENT GAMES - Island Division

Casa Mia, 8, Brewery, 6

The Brewery had an early 3-0 lead, only to see Casa Mia rally and then fend off a late comeback by the Brewery. John Remhoff, Jack O’Brien and Bill Shurina stung the ball for three hits each, with Remhoff, Rich Small, Ray Kane and O’Brien each having two RBIs for Casa Mia. Tom Angelo stroked three hits for Brewery and Dave Coward drove in two runs.

Islander Restaurant, 15, DaVinci’s, 12

It was a tie ball game through five innings before the Islander took command of the game with a five-run seventh inning. Ed Kingsbury pulled the trigger for four hits and Ron Hobson had three, including a home run for Islander. Bob Levasseur drove in four runs, Bill Thompson, three, with Ron Engels and Mike Endelman knocking in two. Jerry Engel had four hits and four RBIs for DaVinci’s. Teammates Dan Moriarty and John Barrett sprayed three hits, Denny Lello clobbered a three-run home run and Larry Anspach had two RBIs.


Joey’s Pizza, 14, ADKOS, 4

Joey’s Pizza, Marco Division champs, capped off the regular season knocking off second place ADKOS. Al Cenicola, George Bennett, and Joe Kruse peppered three hits each, with Cenicola and Bennett recording two doubles each. Nick Jacullo drove in three runs, with Bennett, Bill Kayhart, and Gary Grant knocking in two each.

Crazy Flamingo, 12, Mutual of Omaha Bank, 9

Joe Furst, Doug Patton and Fred Kramer each stroked three hits for the Crazy Bird, with Patton driving home four runs. John Luegering smacked a triple in the win as Flamingo won the team’s sixth game in a row. John Dugan chased four runs home and Tom Purtell two runs for Mutual of Omaha Bank.

Rookies, 15, CJ’s on the Bay, 2

Ed Kopecky pitched a six hitter as Rookies cruised past CJ’s. Mike Walsh ripped four hits, while Kopecky and Bill Voss had three hits each. Joe Kruse had four RBIs on a double and home run, while Kopecky recorded three RBIs, and Voss and Fred Carlson each had two.


Mutual of Omaha Bank, 19, Rookies, 1

The Bank crushed Rookies with a 20-hit attack. Roger Fleming led the hit parade banging out four while Ed Brack, Buff Morris and John Hedges all ripped three. One of Brack’s hits was a home run. Tom Purtell drove in four runs, Brack three, Fleming and John Dugan two each. Pitcher Dan Callahan limited Rookies to six hits.

CJ’s on the Bay, 10, Crazy Flamingo, 6

CJ’s scored six runs in the first and another four in the fourth that Flamingo could not over come, even though Flamingo’s outhit CJ’s 15 to 8. Tony Brock drove in four runs and Warren Uhl two runs for CJ’s. John Luegering had two RBIs and Dan O’Sullivan walloped a triple for Flamingo’s.
