— Physicians Regional Healthcare System is looking toward the future.

The 101-bed Physicians Regional–Pine Ridge is considering an expansion but no decision has been made, hospital spokeswoman Taylor Hamilton said.

"We are looking at expanding the Pine Ridge campus but we're in such an early development stage we don't know what size it is yet," she said.

The hospital system, owned by Naples-based Health Management Associates, hasn't yet sent a letter of intent to the state Agency for Healthcare Administration, the first step in the application process for seeking approval to add more hospital beds.

The most recent deadline for letters was Feb. 6; the next deadline is Aug. 6.

Physicians Regional also operates the 100-bed hospital on Collier Boulevard, which opened in February 2007.

The occupancy rate of the Pine Ridge campus was 58 percent for 2011, according to utilization reports to the state Agency for Healthcare Administration.

During the first three months of 2011 during the busier winter season, the occupancy rate was 72 percent.
