Players Club teams shine in USTA Sectional

Two tennis teams, representing The Players Club & Spa Resort, played outstandingly in the 2012 USTA Florida Sectional Super Senior Championships.

Its 3.0 Super Senior Men and 3.5 Super Senior Men traveled to Daytona last weekend to compete against teams from other counties throughout the state, accompanied by Denny Rager, director of tennis at the Players Club.

The 3.5 Super Senior Men’s Team, captained by Jim Moore, made their way to Sectionals with an overall local league record of 8-1 in their sub-flight. They continued on to win yet another playoff against the fall division winners.

Having clinched the title of local league winners, they advanced to the Sectional Championships in Daytona. Once there, they defeated teams from Duval, Alachua and Marion counties to win all three matches in their flight. The team won Florida Sectional 3.5 Super Senior Men’s Championship after ousting Hillsborough County in the finals with decisive victories on all three courts.

The team advances to the USTA National Championships in 2013 where they will play the “best of the best” from other sections throughout the country. Their team members include Jim Moore, John Weatherwax, John Simpson, Bruce Houran, Dave Smith, Pat Monti, Larry Weinstein, Gary Lefebvre, David Saks, Eik Klein, and Paul Freeman.

The 3.0 Super Senior Men’s Team, captained by Steve Burns, advanced to Sectionals after finishing their local division with a 9-1 record. They faced some tough competition in Daytona and wrapped up the weekend in second place. Team members included Steve Burns, Wayne DeYarmond, Chuck Gebhart, Stan Wise, Bill Spagnoli, George Bernhardt, Joe Abruzese, Bob Petrantoni, Harold Burke, Art Katsaros, Chuck Caine.
