On the soccer field and in the classroom Lely senior Justine Giles exceeds.

That is why she is this year’s Lely Winged Foot Scholar-Athlete of the Year candidate.

The winner will be announced at the Winged Foot banquet on Thursday, May 24, at Waldorf Astoria Naples.

Giles has thought about the award since eighth grade.

“I’m extremely honored to be able to represent Lely as a winged foot nominee,” she said. “This is something that I’ve wanted since I first heard about the scholarship program when I was in eighth grade. I’ve had wonderful teachers and coaches throughout my entire high school career and I hope that, regardless of the outcome, I’ve been able to represent Lely to be the great school that it is.”

Matt Kuk, Lely activities director, extolled Giles virtues.

“We are so happy to have Justine represent Lely High School as our Winged Foot Award nominee,” Kuk said.

“Justine excelled in the athletic realm during high school, including earning All-Conference honors in soccer. She is also a star in the classroom with over a 5.0 GPA and a top-five ranking in her class while serving as the president of the National Honor Society. We believe Justine will move on to do great things after high school, and we are so pleased to have her as part of the Lely family.”

Her soccer coach, Tony Smith, spoke of her ability as a player and leader.

“She was a great leader on the field and on the sidelines,” Smith said. “She played aggressively; but cleanly. She was an amazing captain and led by example.”

Since the beginning, 23 years ago, Lely has had three Winged Foot winners, Ryan Krzykowkis, Jacki Haar and Eric Beights.
