Suspect dies after struggle with deputy, who was also shot

— A pursuit in Lee County on Wednesday night ended with one suspect dead and a deputy shot.

A Lee County sheriff’s deputy was conducting a traffic stop on a black, Dodge Caravan on Interstate 75.

The driver refused to stop and a chase ended up at the intersection of Cemetery Road and Stratton Road in the Buckingham area. Three men fled from the mini-van, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The driver and deputy who initiated the stop struggled and shots were fired. Both the driver and the deputy were shot. The driver died as a result of those injuries. The deputy was transported to the hospital and is recovering.

One of the passengers in the van was caught and taken into custody. He is identified as Gregory Coleman, 24 , of Lehigh Acres.

The other passenger eluded deputies and has not been located. He is not deemed a threat to the community, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office refuses to release the name of the deputy involved in the shooting.

The identity of the driver is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
