Student-Athletes at Marco Island Charter Middle School owned the night on Thursday.
It was the annual Student-Athlete Awards Night in the school gym.
As the top 21 athletes in their sport stepped up to be recognized, as was each team, the intensity built.
The crowd cheered loudly when Patrick Michel and Katie Schiller were named the Outstanding Student-Athletes of the Year.
Michel excelled in football, basketball and track. Schiller stood out in volleyball, soccer, track and cheering.
The Michael “Mickey” Mendel Awards went to Daniela Marroquin and Colin McMullen. McMullen ewxcelled in football, soccer and track. Marroquin was a team leader in soccer, track and cross country.
Roger Raymond, athletic director, spoke about all four student-athletes.
“I could list his accomplishments, but it would take longer than we have time,” he said of Michel. “He is a leader and takes charge in assisting coaches. His classroom demeanor is awesome. He is a wonderful young man and will do great things in the future.
On Schiller, Raymond said, “Beyond her excellence in sports, she also excels in the classroom. She always seems to have a smile and is upbeat all the time.”
On McMullen, Raymond said, “Many times as a student-athlete faces adversity (right hip injury) and they can give up or work through the problem. This young man faced adversity and won. He is an excellent student as well as a strong student-athlete.
On Marrroquin, Raymond said, “She is an outstanding example of what we like to see in our student-athletes. She works hard in practice and in games. She supports her teammates and respects her opponents. Her school work ethic is beyond the norm and she is a nice person as well as a wonderful student.”
Seventh grader Rosie Poling won two awards as the girls outstanding track and cross country runner.

Volleyball: Girls Varsity, Katie Moss, Boys, Jordan Canady, JV Rose Sullivan.
Track/Field: Girls, Rosie Poling, Boys, Trevor Dye.
Cross Country: Girls, Rosie Poling, Boys, Joshua Wagner.
Soccer: Girls, Daniela Marroquin, Boys, Colin McMullen.
Cheerleader: Haley Havemeier.
Golf: Jonathon Irigoyen.
Tennis: Noah Holten.
Football: Patrick Michel.
