Editorial: Let more sunshine in

Project Sunburst

The Sunshine State, long recognized as a national leader in open government, has taken another step in the direction of greater transparency with the launch of Project Sunburst.

Under the program implemented by Gov. Rick Scott, the public now is able to access emails to and from the governor — as well as emails to and from the governor's leadership team — at flgov.com/sunburst.

In coming months, Project Sunburst will be expanded to include other agencies within the executive branch of state government.

While the goal is to post the governor's emails for review within 24 hours, Project Sunburst policy requires emails to be posted within seven days of receipt unless permission is granted to extend the deadline.

Maintaining all emails at first was problematic for Scott. This program appears to make lemonade from that lemon.
