It was an exciting comeback and victory for the Naples Lions in the Cal Ripken Spring League championship game at Veterans Park on May 11.
The Lions, consisting solely of players from First Baptist Academy, scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, then executed a perfect suicide squeeze bunt with two out in the bottom of the sixth, the final inning, to earn a 15-14 win over the Naples Cubs.
After their big fifth inning when they were able to knot the score at 14-14, FBA fifth-grader Dylan Doria pitched a 1-2-3 top of the sixth, striking out two Cubs.
In their half of the sixth, Joe Tutino, Doria's teammate and classmate, led off with a walk. The youth eventually found himself at third base after the Lions loaded the bases with two outs, and Zack Brecher coming to the plate. That's when Tutino got the sign from coach Bryan Wolff that the team would attempt the suicide squeeze.
"I thought, 'Oh my gosh. I'm the winning run,'" Tutino said. "... It was intense."
As soon as the Cubs pitcher released the ball to home plate, Tutino took off. Brecher placed the ball in fair territory, and Tutino beat the throw home to give the Lions the title.
"Everyone tackled me," said Tutino, who went 2-for-3 on the night with three runs and two RBIs. "I got crushed. It was great."
In other Cal Ripken action, minor league champions were the Dragons, coached by Andy Buschle. The Babe Ruth 15U champions was Team Diesel, coached by Joel Gonzalez.
