NAPLES — Verandah in Fort Myers has been voted the best golf course in Southwest Florida in Gulfshore Life magazine's "2012 Best of the Gulfshore" feature.
The May issue of the magazine named winners in numerous categories, based on votes by its readers.
Verandah has two championship golf courses — Old Orange, by Bob Cupp; and Whispering Oak, by Jack Nicklaus and his son Jack II.
Balter shoots 63: Community School's Ben Balter couldn't do much wrong at the Scott Robertson Memorial Tournament in Roanoke, Va., on Saturday. Balter was 8 under for the day, standing on the 14th tee box. Balter finished with a 63, tying the tournament record set by current PGA Tour player Brendon Todd in 2001.
"I tried to stay in the moment, as hard as it is when you're 8-under par through 13 holes, it's kinda hard to stay one shot at a time, but I did that the best as I could," he told the Roanoke Times.
That magic didn't carry over to Sunday's final round. Balter, who was in the lead by a shot, faltered to an 80 and tied for 24th at 217. "Nothing went right," he told the Times. "It happens in this game."
Young ace: Sam Nunner, an 11-year-old, made a hole-in-one at Golf Club of the Everblades on May 19. Nunner used a 3-wood on the 146-yard No. 3. Jeff Nunner was the witness.
