Women's tennis: Lely grad Embree of Florida moves into NCAA Round of 16

Lely High School graduate Lauren Embree of the University of Florida cruised past Maryland’s Cristina Stancu in the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships.

Embree, a junior, beat Stancu, 6-2, 6-2, to move into the Round of 16. She will face second-seeded Beatrice Capra of Duke on Friday at 11 a.m. in Athens, Ga.

“I got off to a much better start today than I did yesterday,” said Embree after her 20th consecutive singles victory gave her a 31-5 record this season. “I played a little bit more aggressive. Overall, I was happy with how I played. I thought my forehand was lot better than it has been, which is good for me because the more I can attack with my forehand the easier points I’ll have. I feel good and I’m ready for (today).”

Embree and Joanna Mather looked fresh and sharp in their first round match of the 32-team NCAA Doubles Championships. They defeated Northwestern’s No. 28-ranked duo of Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton, 6-0, 6-1. Embree and Mather advance to the NCAA Round of 16 where they face California’s fifth-ranked Annie Goransson and Anett Schutting on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
