GOODLAND — The third annual running of the Goodland Canoe & Kayak Regatta took place on Saturday afternoon, in the laidback little fishing village squirreled away on Marco Island, outside the city limits.
While organizer Jim Ketchum of Marker 8, which hosted the event, foresees it growing into a major attraction, ala the Great Dock Canoe Race, it remains low-key and not-so-organized, which is the way the locals like it.
Out of the 11 entries, Kim Kelsey took first place overall, as he has every time, but people were easily as interested in listening to live music from Tantrum, a four-piece classic rock band, enjoying a pig roast, and hanging out with friends and a few visitors, like Felipe and Mindy Correa, who appreciate the laidback vibe and funky atmosphere of Goodland, where thousands of crab traps line the streets waiting for next season – stone crab season, not tourist season.
