The Chicago Fire Juniors Florida Under 12 girls team competed in the Nike Cup Championship on May 19-20. The team scored nine goals in three pool play games while recording three shutouts.
The Fire beat FC United in the finals 2-1 after overcoming a 1-0 deficit early in the second half. The team is coached by Colm Hamill. Colm will be missed as this is his last tournament with the Fire before moving back to Boston.
Colm coached the girls to three championships and one runner-up finish in six tournaments over the last eight months.
The Fire players are Olivia Buschle, Riley Albanos, Acelya Aydogmus, Karleigh Acosta, Josie Buffington, Kendall Flaharty, Kyla Gill, Claire Noble, Morgan Parmalee, Alyssa Pilavis, Aryanna Saenz and Kalee Williams.
The tournament was hosted by Florida Rush Soccer Club and the games were played at the Northwest Recreational Sports Complex in Apopka.
Naturals win state title: The 11U Naples Naturals are the Florida Nations baseball state champions. The 13-team tournament was held in Bradenton on May 19-20.
After pool play on Saturday, the teams were divided into an Elite bracket and Select Bracket for the playoffs on Sunday.
After tying their first pool play game on Saturday 0-0 against the Florida Curve, and beating the Oviedo Outlaws 6-1, the Naturals were seeded No. 3 in the Elite bracket.
The Naturals defeated the Sarasota Seminoles 4-0 in the first round of the playoffs on Sunday. They beat the Cannons 19-7 in the quarterfinals, and then played the Florida Curve again in the championship game, winning 19-7.
Cal Ripken minor league champs: The Dragons won the Naples Cal Ripken Minors Tournament on May 11 at Veterans Community Park. They beat the Biscuits in extra innings 9-8.
