Man's neck impaled by pole at swamp buggy races

An East Naples man was seriously injured Sunday after his neck was impaled by a pole at the swamp buggy races, according to Collier County sheriff's deputies.

Richard Tyler Brandon, 24, tripped over a log around 12:30 a.m. and fell onto a pole attached to a chair, reports said. When deputies arrived to the Florida Sports Park, 8520 Collier Blvd., two women were holding a shirt to his neck to stop the bleeding.

Brandon was able to talk to the women but was taken to an area hospital in serious condition, according to an incident report. Deputies said alcohol was a factor.

Also at the scene, deputies arrested Joseph Michael Gephart, 29, saying he was obstructing them as they tried to help Brandon.

An update on Brandon's condition was not available Monday.
