Republicans swept the Lee County commission races, leaving their non-party affiliated and write-in opponents in the dust.
As of 9:45 p.m. 62.7 percent of precincts have been reported.
District 1 incumbent John Manning held onto his seat with 96 percent of the vote. His opponent, write-in candidate Gerard David Jr., won 4 percent. Manning, who is currently the commission chairman, has served on the commission from 1988 to 2000, and from 2010 to today.
In District 2, Cecil Pendergrass received 67 percent of the vote, defeating John W. Sawyer III, who ran without party affiliation, and write-in candidate Neal Moore, who told the Daily News he was tricked into appearing on the ballot. Current District 2 Commissioner Brian Bigelow unsuccessfully ran for clerk of courts, which required he leave his post on the commission. Pendergrass is a former Fort Myers Police officer, where he served for 25 years.
Fort Myers Beach Mayor Larry Kiker also joins the commission, winning the District 3 seat with 63 percent of the vote against former Daily News reporter Charlie Whitehead who won 37 percent of the vote without party affiliation. Kiker knocked out longtime Commissioner Ray Judah in the Republican primary.
Frank Mann held onto his District 5 seat against Matt Miller, who ran with the Independence Party of Florida. Mann, 70, received 60 percent of the vote to Miller’s 40 percent. Mann has been involved in state and local politics since 1974.
The winners will be sworn in on Nov. 20.
Lee County Tax Collector Larry Hart also won reelection with 71 percent of the vote against James Chandler, who won 29 percent without party affiliation.
