Marco Island's Lauren Embree, a senior at the University of Florida, won her first-round singles match at the 2012 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y., on Thursday.
Embree, the No. 1 overall seed in the 32-player draw, needed nearly two hours to beat Ole Miss' Caroline Rohde-Moe, 6-3, 7-5. Embree, who's ranked sixth nationally, plays fifth-ranked Zsofie Susanyi of California on Friday.
With Thursday's victory Embree, a Lely High School graduate, improved to 97-13 in her illustrious singles career, including a 6-0 record this year.
Florida's Danielle Collins and Sofie Oyen also won their first-round matches.
