Deputies locate hunter lost in Everglades

Sheriff's deputies have located a hunter who was lost in the Everglades this evening near Turner River Road and U.S. 41 East in eastern Collier County.

The hunter, a Marco Island police officer, is safe, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Michelle Batten said. She said he was out hunting in the woods and lost his GPS. The hunter's name was not immediately available.

“We were in contact by phone with him the whole time,” Batten said. “We knew where he was.”

The hunter was about a mile into the woods, about 1 ½ miles west of Turner River Road near the Fire Prairie Trail, Batten said.
