To raise awareness of Calusa and Paleo, the Marco Eagle Sanctuary Foundation held a "Welcome Back to the Nest" party Thursday evening at the Snook Inn.

The birds, a nesting pair named by the students of Tommie Barfield Elementary, have built up their nest and are wasting no time, said Carl Way, president of the sanctuary foundation. The bald eagle twosome has already produced a clutch of eggs, and is sitting the nest, working on raising a brood of youngsters.

"About 35 days from now, we could have eaglets," said Way. The parent eagles, presumably, are busy with incubating their babies, but they would have found it difficult to drop in, with fishing line strung overhead above the patio at the Snook.

Down at ground level, the guests enjoyed heavy hors d'oeuvres and conversation, as well as the tunes of Duncan Wheeler. He played favorites, including "The Cover of Rolling Stone" and "If I Had a Million Dollars," on which he got all the help he needed from Rick Kerr.

Susie Walsh, predictably, had a hat matching the event's theme, featuring a parrothead, but for once hers was not the most appropriate or showy chapeau. Barry Grass sported a cap featuring a realistic bald eagle, complete with rapidly flapping wings.

Linda Turner and Judy Sacher, clad in feathers, sold raffle tickets, and Linda Boston emceed the prize presentations. Capt. Don McDonald donated a framed eagle photo, which was the grand prize.

"We're always looking for contributions and new members," said Way. To support the work of the Marco Eagle Sanctuary Foundation, or for more information, call 239-394-9285, or go online to marcoeaglesanctuaryfoundation.org.
