If you're looking for business success stories in Southwest Florida, you needn't look any further than Naples-based Position Logic.
Founded in 2007 right before the economic meltdown, the company has thrived in the intervening five years — so much so that this year they've made the 2012 "Inc. 500 List'' of fastest-growing private companies in America.
Position Logic, founded by immigrants Felix Lluberes of the Dominican Republic and Hong Long of Laos, provides hosted GPS tracking platforms and software to entrepreneurs looking to start their own GPS tracking businesses without having to invest hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars in start-up and software development costs.
For one low buy-in cost and an inexpensive monthly licensing fee for every GPS device they want to track on the platform, entrepreneurs get a ready-to-run, white-labeled GPS tracking solution which they can then use to sell GPS tracking services to businesses and government entities.
If that sounds like a great business model to you, you're right. Businesses are becoming increasingly aware of the fuel savings and other efficiencies they can gain by monitoring their assets, and with that increasing awareness in the business world the GPS tracking industry is expected to grow by billions of dollars over the next few years.
Add that to the rapid growth in the number and type of GPS tracking devices available, and it is in fact a fine time to be starting a GPS tracking business — and an even better time to be the company powering all of those GPS tracking businesses.
Position Logic's typical client is an entrepreneur who has identified GPS tracking as a growth industry but who has neither the time nor the experience to develop their own tracking platform. Position Logic's team of engineers and account managers work very closely with new clients to get them up and running on the platform, providing the new company fully featured GPS tracking software that is run on Position Logic's servers but fully branded to the company's own identity. The company is then free to sell their GPS services to anyone in need of them, with end users ranging from pool cleaners to municipalities to major corporations — anyone, in fact, who sees the potential benefits of monitoring their vehicle fleet and other assets, like construction equipment.
To cite a typical example, Naples-based ArgoTrak, a Position Logic client, provides tracking services to companies in Lee and Collier counties and other locations in the U.S. and Canada, and even in places like Trinidad (tracking boat races) and in St. Kitts (tracking taxis racing around the island).
Being just five years old, the company's beginnings are still fresh in the mind of co-founder — and now president and CEO — Lluberes. "I remember sitting around the kitchen table with Hong, writing the software for the first version of the platform on my laptop," reminisces Lluberes. That first year was difficult, with both men funding the company with their own savings and working side projects to help pay the bills. "But I believed in it," says Lluberes. "I bought seven desks and crammed them into a tiny office and said, 'By next year, all these desks will be filled with employees.'"
Filled they were, and Lluberes, Hong and Position Logic haven't looked back since.
Lluberes attributes the success of Position Logic not only to the technology powering their GPS tracking platform, but also to the overall concept which he calls PPT – People, Process and Technology.
PPT was an important concept to hit on, says Lluberes, because it embodies the idea that a company with great people and processes as well as great technology will always outperform a company that has technology only.
Once that idea was clear Position Logic was off to the races, hiring the best people it could find and documenting its best practices and solutions so that its successes could be repeated time and time again, across many different clients.
His solutions have been so successful and so repeatable, in fact, that Lluberes directly attributes his company's position on the Inc. 500 growth list to the ways in which Position Logic has enabled the growth of their clients' businesses.
Today Position Logic has clients running their own GPS tracking businesses across the United States and in more than 50 countries around the world.
Their success is a triumphant story for Lluberes and Long, who have realized the archetypal American Dream story; for their ever-growing list of clients; and for the local economy. With the vast majority of their clients being outside of Southwest Florida — and even outside of the country — the money that Position Logic brings into the area are new dollars that are injected straight into the economy.
Operating in a growth industry with great People, Processes and Technology to fuel them, Position Logic is poised to continue their growth into the foreseeable future — making them a true local business success story, indeed.
