Youth was served in the Open Division for best overall times. Rosie Poling, 13, of Marco Island and Ken Leidal, 17, Downingtown, Pa., won. Poling recorded a time of 21:28 and Leidal, 17:28.9, Mary Kozik, 15, of Wadsworth, Ohio, placed second and Emma Fernandez, 15, of Marco Island, third. Behind Leidal was Jesus Hernandez and Ulises Vivar, both 18 and former Lely cross country teammates.

Masters winners (over 40) were Patricia Poling of Marco Island, in 23:24.1 and David Browne of Naples in 20:44.4. Following Poling were Clara Alber of Marco Island and Margo Klungensmith of Naples. Just behind Browne were Mike Proto of Bristol and Joseph Lang of Marco Island.

It was a family affair for the Polings as dad Bob topped the 45-49 males, Mickey, 11, won the 11-to-14 and Ellie won the 10-and-under.

Yet the runner for the future may be Maggie Poling, 5. She ran the entire 3.1 miles in 35:01.

Her sister Rosie said Maggie is already competitive.

"She has already told me that she is going to beat all my records," Rosie said.

Rosie, an eighth grader at the Marco Island Charter Middle School, has become somewhat of a legend around Collier County and beyond for her cross country and track exploits. Even on Saturday other runners were yelling "You go Rosie" as she passed them.

Marco Islanders apparently pointed to this race, being held for the second time and is expected to become an annual event.

In the women's divisions Islanders won 14 of 17. In the men's it was 8 of 16.
