Car driven by Collier man critically injures pedestrian using cane in Lee County

— A North Fort Myers pedestrian is in critical condition Friday morning after being hit by a car as he used a cane to cross a Lee County road.

Florida Highway Patrol investigators believe Christopher Heilman, 53, was walking across Bayshore Road around 5:45 a.m. when a Naples driver headed east crashed into him.

Heilman was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital after he was hit once by the front of the vehicle, slammed into the windshield, then struck his head on the roadway, a crash report noted.

Robert McEwen, 69, of Collier County, was driving the 2005 Chrysler Crossfire that hit Heilman. McEwen was not injured.

Alcohol is not considered a factor in the crash, the report noted. The investigation remains open and no charges have yet been filed.

FHP is asking anyone who saw a man walking in the area with a cane early Friday morning to contact them at 239-938-1800.
