Florida woman dies in Alligator Alley crash on Thanksgiving

— A female driver from Florida was killed and her passenger seriously injured in a single-car Alligator Alley crash on Thanksgiving Day.

A 51-year-old New Port Richey woman died at the scene of the crash just after 4 p.m. Thursday near mile marker 76 of Interstate 75 in Collier County, the Florida Highway Patrol reports. Her identity was not released, pending notification of her next of kin.

A male passenger, Lesly La Fond, 58, also of New Port Richey, received serious injuries and was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers.

Both occupants of the 2010 Nissan sedan were wearing seat belts, FHP reports.

The car was traveling west on the Alley in the outside lane when it entered the emergency lane on the north shoulder. The driver over-corrected to the left, the car traveled across both westbound lanes, and rotated counter-clockwise into the grass median. The vehicle then overturned several times upon entering the eastbound lanes. It came to rest on its roof against the chain-link fence on the grass shoulder on the interstate's south side, reports show.
