An East Naples man is behind bars, accused of calling a friend to give him a ride home and then stealing $600 from his friend's vehicle.

Jason McCann, 31, of the 4500 block of Gulfstream Drive, is facing a felony grand theft charge.

In mid-June, the victim told Collier County sheriff's deputies he received a call from a friend he knew as Jason Taylor who said he had been kicked out of the house by his wife and needed a ride home to pick up some of his belongings, according to an arrest report. The victim picked up his friend — later identified as McCann — and drove him to the intersection of 18th Place Southwest and 42nd Street Southwest.

When the victim asked McCann which house was his, he pointed to one, exited the car and walked toward the house, reports said. When McCann never returned, the victim told deputies he noticed $600 was missing from his center console.

On Nov. 6, deputies located McCann in the Collier County jail, where he was in custody on unrelated charges. He denied stealing the money and suggested the victim lost his money in a drug deal gone wrong. Deputies arrested McCann on the grand theft charge on Friday.
