Gulf Coast basketball player Mackenzie Reiselt did whatever was needed of her as the Sharks carved up the field of the Bokamper's Thanksgiving Turkey Shoot at Barron Collier High before falling in the finals by a single field goal to Port Charlotte. For her all-around performance, Reiselt was named to the all-tournament team.
"It was a pretty decent tournament," Reiselt said.
"She has a good basketball background and she brings that knowledge on to the court with her," coach Mark Woodruff said. "She also brings leadership and composure to the team and an all-around game in general."
When Gulf Coast needed offense, Reiselt provided, as evident by the game-high 19 points scored against Community School — a team known for stingy defense that has appeared in the Class 2A state semifinals the last four seasons — in the tournament semifinal. The senior guard paced the Sharks with an average of 13 points per game over the tournament, but she also understands the need to get everyone else involved on offense.
"I'm usually a pretty good shooter but being a point guard, I know I've got to try and get assists," Reiselt said. "I'm able to see the entire floor pretty well and I can find the open person, even if they don't know they are open."
On defense, Reiselt had the frequent task of containing the opposition's best scoring threat on the perimeter. Against the Seahawks, the senior guard helped hold a potent Haley Nadeau to just five points while finishing with three rebounds and a pair of steals.
Even when she is on the sidelines, Reiselt helped provide motivation and leadership for a team that is already heavy on upperclassmen.
"This year we have been trying to include the entire team and she has really been picking that up," Woodruff said.
