Bear shot, killed after charging at FWC officer in Ave Maria

State wildlife officers shot and killed a black bear in the Ave Maria community Sunday.

The 250-pound male bear was first spotted on the Ave Maria campus and later showed up in the garage of a nearby home. The bear was shot and killed when it charged an FWC officer.

“The officer did everything he could to try and back away slowly,” said Jorge Pino, a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman. “He started to increase his pace because the bear increased his pace. The officer actually fell down recovered and the bear kept coming at him and at that point he had no other choice but to shoot the bear and kill it.”
