Hideout Golf Club member Owen Joyner of Spring, Texas, won his opening match in the U.S. Senior Amateur on Monday at Mountain Ridge Golf Club in West Caldwell, N.J.
Joyner beat Gary Lanier of Pleasant Hill, Calif., 3 and 2. Joyner took control on the back nine, winning Nos. 11, 12 and 13 to go 4 up.
Joyner shot 75-71/146 to tie for 26th in stroke play. He'll play Pat O'Donnell of Happy Valley, Ore., at 8:34 a.m. Tuesday.
Last year, three Hideout members — Dan Smith, Doug Stroup and Chip Travis — made it to the Senior Amateur, but none qualified for match play.
