Marco Police Foundation Open decided by tiebreaker

Golfers in the 10th annual Marco Police Foundation Open scrambled for a winning score; but a named sponsor for the event was scored on Saturday at the Island Country Club.

Scott Gibbs, Dave Rice Jr., Brian Day and Sean Shea, won the outing, but a tiebreaker had to be used for the decision.They tied with the foursome of Tee McCabe, Scott Hendrickson, Jim Lane and Bill Lyle at 56 in the scramble event. The scores on the toughest holes were then tabulated with Gibbs' team coming out the winner.Third place went to the team of Mike Kelly, Jim Bonfitto, Tony Iannotta and Bob Holm with a 59.

Individual winners were, closest to the pin, Mark Doherty, longest drives, Joan Laimbeer and Jim Lane. No woman drove onto the green for the closest to the pin.

Dick Shanahan, event chairman, announced that Physicians Regional Healthcare System will be the name sponsor, beginning next year. It will be named the Physicians Regional Open.

Scott Campbell, CEO, said, "We want to be the major sponsor to show our commitment to Marco and the surrounding the area."

He said the new clinic on Marco Island should be complete in late December or early January. Physicians Regional's new clinic will have 8,500 square feet, with 3,500 for a walk-in clinic. It will have primary care physicians, specialists and rehab services.

Physicians Regional sponsored the lunch, the Marco Eagle, advertising, CJ's on the Bay the hole-in-one prize that wasn't won and Morgan Stanley, golf balls.

"Disco" Dave Bierbrauer was recognized by Shanahan for providing 47 raffle prizes.
