Another sign of a recovering Southwest Florida economy?

Contractors in September pulled 55 permits to build single-family houses in unincorporated Lee County. That's a more than 100 percent increase from September 2011, when 27 permits were pulled.

In August, 41 permits were issued. The 55 permits pulled last month were for homes valued at more than $15.3 million, according to the Lee County Department of Community Development.

The county agency oversees planning, development and building services, environmental review, zoning, building inspection and code enforcement for the unincorporated areas of Lee such as Estero and San Carlos Park.

HMA donates to two Collier schools
