Lee County deputies on Wednesday arrested a Cape Coral man accused in the 1996 shooting death of a North Carolina police officer.

Scott Vincent Sica, 36, of the 2000 block of Ottersrest Lane, was named on a warrant for first-degree murder. Investigators said Sica is accused of shooting Jonesville, N.C., police officer Sgt. Gregory Martin during a traffic stop in October of 1996.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said it has been working with the Jonesville Police Department, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations and the FBI to close the case. Sica was arrested at his home around 7:45 p.m. by the fugitive warrants unit, street crimes unit and SWAT team.

Martin was shot in the head several times at close range, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page, which tracks officers killed in the line of duty. In a comment posted to the site in May, Martin’s daughter said “nobody could ever feel the pain I have felt growing up.”

“Every day that goes by i hope and i pray that you can finally get the justice you deserve and what you worked hard on,” she wrote.
