Technically, Marco Island Academy has won its first varsity football game. Its opponent, Zion Lutheran Christian School of Deerfield Beach, called Wednesday to cancel the game scheduled for Friday.
The team only has 18 on its roster, and three were injured in a 69-6 loss on Friday to Coral Springs Christian.
"It's very unfortunate for us because we were sure we could beat them," Academy coach Andy Delgado said.
He was able to get another game, traveling to Dunbar, playing the JV team at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Manta Rays have lost two varsity games and one JV game in their inaugural season.
