I-75 reopens after 47-vehicle crash

The Interstate has reopened.

EARLIER

SARASOTA COUNTY - A massive, chain-reaction crash involving nearly 50 vehicles has closed southbound Interstate 75 at mile marker 213 in Sarasota County.

The crash happened near the overpass at University Parkway, at the Manatee/Sarasota County line.

At least three of the 52 people injured were critically injured and required transport by helicopter. At least two had to be extricated from their vehicles.

I-75 southbound will be closed for an extended amount of time. Vehicles traveling southbound on I-75 need to exit at State Road 70 and re-enter the interstate at State Road 780 (Fruitville Road) at mile marker 210, the Florida Highway Patrol reports.
