Panther dies on East Collier County road

A panther was found dead in Collier County on Saturday morning.

The 2 ½ year old female was killed after a collision with a vehicle on U.S. 41 East near San Marco Road.

This is the 17th panther death in Florida this year and the ninth killed on a Florida roads.

In 2011, 24 panthers died and 9 deaths were caused by collisions with vehicles.

Scientists say a growing panther population is running out of room in Southwest Florida and must expand to other parts of Florida or other southeastern states. The population has rebounded from as few as 30 panthers to between 120 and 160, scientists say.
