Women's tennis: Marco native Embree to play for collegiate grand slam championship

Florida Gators senior and Lely High graduate Lauren Embree defeated Southern Cal’s Danielle Lao to advance to today’s singles championship of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

The Marco Island native won 6-2, 7-5 to advance to her first national singles championship match, where she will face Virginia freshman Julia Elbaba. Embree reached the NCAA singles semifinals in 2011 but retired with an injury in the third set.

“I thought I played really well,” Embree said. “I tried to be more aggressive on the bigger points and fought really hard. It’s definitely exciting to be in the final and I can’t wait for (Sunday).”
