MARCO ISLAND — The call has gone out for golfers to help with this year’s Christmas Island Style golf outing, the proceeds for which will go to help fund the various Christmas events which are held between Thanksgiving and Christmas every year for the last 25 years on Marco Island.
The Christmas Island Style series of events are completely self-funding and depend upon no monies from the City of Marco. That has not always been the case, as the city use to provide a grant of $15,000 to help fund the annual activities. Previous to that a grant was given by Florida Water Services which use to fund the events through a similar grant prior to being acquired by the city some years ago.
“It just made sense” said Greg Schneider a longtime member of the committee; “we didn’t want anyone to have a complaint and we wanted the freedom to provide the community with the events they wanted and have the flexibility to be creative, and “Stef” (Steve Stefanides) made that happen without missing a beat.”
The CIS golf outing this year will be held at the Marco Rookery Golf Course. The committee is looking for foursomes, hole sponsors and general donations to help with their largest fundraisers of the year.
The event will be a shotgun start with a best ball format. There will be a continental breakfast and an awards luncheon following the event where a number of special door prizes and awards for closest to the hole and longest drives for both men and women will be awarded. Cash prizes for 1st and 2nd place winners will also be awarded.
