Naples motorcyclist injured in early Sunday crash

A 21-year-old Naples motorcyclist was seriously injured Sunday morning when, authorities say, he sped through a stop sign at Immokalee Road, causing his motorcycle to drag him and go airborne.

Ronald Rubio was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital with serious injuries, including possible head trauma, after the crash on Shady Hollow Boulevard, according to a report by Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Daniel Castilla.

The report says Rubio was eastbound on Shady Hollow Boulevard at 2:30 a.m., when he failed to heed a stop sign at Immokalee Road. When he hit the brakes, the report says, the motorcycle tipped on its left side, causing it to drag Rubio until it hit a raised curb.

There, the motorcycle hit a warning sign, causing it to go airborne toward the grass shoulder. The report says the motorcycle came to rest on its right side, facing north; Rubio was wearing a helmet.

Collier County court records show Rubio was fined five times after being ticketed in Collier County from November 2008 to June, including tickets for speeding, careless driving and failure to obey a traffic control device.
