ESTERO — Whether it was a freshman who notched a conference victory or a sophomore that was part of four wins or her divers that sprang into action for the first time, Estero swim coach Jen Seluk had plenty of reasons to be proud on Monday as her girls team captured the Lee County Athletic Conference title.

"Boy did they swim exactly like I thought they would," Seluk said. "Everybody held their spot or did better, and that's what you need to do. It's a team effort."

That effort earned the Estero girls their first county title in at least the past decade, Seluk said.

"It's been a long time," she said.

Often a bridesmaid in recent years, Estero finished first with 489 points followed by runner-up Fort Myers with 429 and last year's champion Cape Coral with 414 as that trio clearly outdistanced itself from the rest of the 13-team field.

Fort Myers claimed the boys title with 400 points followed by Cape Coral (372), Riverdale (306) and Estero (275).

The Estero girls 200-yard medley relay team set the day's tone at the Florida Gulf Coast University Aquatics Center by winning the opening event. The victory in 2:01 from Courtney DeVeny, Danilea Jordan, Lauren McLeod and Nikki McCollum was the first of six wins for Estero.

"Our girls pulled together very well. I was impressed," said DeVeny, a junior who later won the 100-backstroke for the third straight year. Her time was 1:01.

DeVeny, who reached the state finals last year, and her teammate Kaitlyn Hauser took part in the day's closest race. Hauser, a freshman, touched the wall a fraction of a second ahead of DeVeny to win the 200 individual medley.

"We had a good race. It was very close. It's good to race somebody from your team so you can learn from it," said DeVeny, who also swims with Hauser on their club team, the Gulf Coast Swim Team.

Including relays, DeVeny was part of three wins, while Jordan, a sophomore, also had an outstanding meet. She was part of four wins: the 50 free, the 100 free and two relays.

"She was stellar today. She really came through," Seluk said.

The meet also featured the debut of four female Estero divers and one male. Seluk wasn't sure if the Wildcats ever had a diving program years ago, but she's glad that they do now.

"Wasn't that excellent? I am beyond pleased," Seluk said. "The divers — with the little six weeks of practice that they've had — are motivated. They really came through today. I was so pleased with their effort. Nerves, anxiety, through the roof, but they really came through."

Fort Myers junior Savannah McAloose won the 1-meter diving competition followed by Estero's Julia Monien, Mikayla Williamson, Katie Slater and Sheridan Obrochta.

McAloose's Green Wave teammate Kendall Brent, a freshman, was a double-winner with wins in the 200 free and 500 free. The latter featured a 14-second margin of victory.

The Green Wave boys successfully defended their team title thanks in part to two wins each from juniors Logan Samuelson (200 free, 100 back) and Blake Woodrow (200 IM, 100 fly) and single wins from seniors Michael Messuri (500 free) and Jacob Alvarado (100 free).
