Officials give OK to Florida Turnpike express lanes

MIAMI — Commissioners in Miami-Dade County and other local officials gave their approval for a proposal to add express lanes to parts of the Florida Turnpike.

Thursday's vote gives the Florida Department of Transportation the go ahead to move forward with plans to add toll lanes to an expressway that's already a toll road.

The Miami Herald reports it could take up to five years to put the first express lane in operation. It is expected to extend between Caribbean Boulevard and the Don Shula Expressway, which is State Road 874. Two more express lanes would eventually run north and south along the turnpike between Kendall Drive and State Road 836.

Turnpike officials say they'll be widening the road to add the express lane. They say it won't take regular lanes from commuters.
