In this archived photo, it was business as usual at Southwest Florida International Airport with some airlines offering lower fares to passengers traveling Wednesday on the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

About a third of the flights at Southwest Florida International Airport have been canceled because of Hurricane Sandy.

The cancelled flights include all flights to New York airports, as well as flights to Baltimore, Philadelphia, Newark, New Jersey, Atlanta City, Boston and Washington.

Airlines have cancelled 49 flights for today at the airport in Fort Myers. The airport is recommending that passengers traveling anywhere on the eastern seaboard, from Virginia north to Maine, contact their carrier for more information.

Flights may also be affected tomorrow, said airport spokeswoman Vicki Moreland.

The storm was expected to make landfall around Atlantic City, N.J., on Monday night.
