An Ochopee woman died early Monday in a single-vehicle crash in eastern Collier County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers said Morning Star Osceola, 50, was driving east on U.S. 41 about 2 miles west of the Miami-Dade county line when her 2013 Chevrolet Suburban sport utility vehicle began to drift into the westbound lanes around 4:15 a.m. Osceola overcorrected, causing her to lose control of the SUV, which overturned and ejected her and a toddler passenger.
The child, a 2- to 3-year-old girl, Madison Cheyne Phillips, also of Ochopee was flown to Miami Children’s Hospital in critical condition. Osceola was pronounced dead at the scene.
Reports said Osceola was not wearing a seat belt and Phillips was not in a child restraint. Troopers have not yet determined if the crash involved alcohol.
